Day two… Check! As the second class ended, everyone in the room had gained knowledge. So far, although it may be laborous, I am enjoying the class. On this blog post I will breif you on three interesting pieces of knowledge I learned today.
To begin with I learned that even the slightest temperature change can cause fish to shift their location elsewhere which is a major problem that affects commerce in the North Sea.
Next I learned the many different types of marine biologists. I was assigned to look up information on “marine biotechnology.” What is marine biotechnology?? Well it is the study of finding usefull substances in the ocean for our benefit. I was amazed at the fact that scientists had discovered a sponge with qualities of a pain killer but more efficient in the way it worked.
Finally, I learned that coral reefs have a symbiotic relstionship with a certain type of algae, this algae is the reason that coral can carry out photosynthesis. Hitting back with water temperature change, it causes the algae to flee which leaves the coral left for dead where it will eventually “bleach.” Recently a study has shown a possible solution. Certain algae from Madagascar can be given off to these coral reefs since they can endure these tempersture changes and will aid the coral reefs in need. This concludes my blog for day two over the Jesuit Marine Biology Course.
