Marine Biology Day 15

0

It all began with the usual wake-up time at 8 and gathering at 8:30. It was raining cats and dogs. We boarded Speedy’s and drove to the marina. We went inside the dive shop and ate breakfast there. When breakfast was over we boarded the boats and drove off to Mountain Point to dive. We geared up on our way there and when we arrived were briefed ofer the dive and then hopped into the water. This sight was my favorite over all of the rest we had gone to throughout the week. It was home to many school of fish, a couple of squid, and best of all it was a legion of moon jelly fish!! Everywhere you looked you would at least see one off in the distance. Our skin, except for the bottom part of your arm and groin, is resistant to the sting of these jelly fish. This is what permit me to pet them and even hold it. Sam noticed how there were baby file fish living inside the jelly, often these fish use jelly fish for transportation because they are very small and vulnerable to predators. After our first dive we prepared for transection, I was in charge of picking up the line with my partner Alec Sellick. So before our turn to go in I had an hour and fifty minutes of surface interval. I used most of this time to go snorkeling. I was able to make 2 squids ink, which was really neat seeing it on the field rather than dissecting it in the lab. So after a relaxing snorkel I rested on the boat until it was my turn to go in the water. Alec and I rolled the tape carefully, when we finished we rose up to the surface. This concluded all our dives at BVI, the were all exceptional. I will never forget the Sea Monkey with it’s great leaders, Andrew and Sam.

After the dives we returned to the marina and drove to Ole’ Yard Village. Here we ate delicious sandwiches and fries. After lunch, we were given our final exam! Alec Sellick and were group 6, our question was along the lines of: “What is the importance of buoyancy and explain how it helped you throughout the week along with your air consumption.” We were the last group to present, and I believe we did great presenting.

When lunch was over we boarded Speedy’s once more to drive back to the resort. Here, we were given 1 hour and 40minutes to relax and do whatever we want until dinner at 6:15. I went to the wifi room and just relaxed a bit. When it was 6:15 we walked to Mad Dogs, there we ate dinner (lasagna night) and celebrated the birthday of two people, Nick T. and Sean, with cake. I bought a Mad Dog shirt. After we ate and sang happy birthday we filled in our diver logs with our team, since I was sea monkey I went with Andrew and Sam. After this we walked back to the resort. This concludes the last day of the learning sessions for the marine biology program. I enjoyed this course and I wish we had more time, the teachers were perfect and the dive instructors as well. I hope that next year, there might be a Marine Biology II because there is still more that I would like to learn!
