Marine Biology Day 8

Today we went over two articles to start. The first one was about the mimic octopus which they found out through DNA sequencing that the mimic octopus’ mimicry began with simple colouration change. They elaborated on the extent of the octopus’ mimicry which was incredible. I’ve never really been into octopi but this made me consider looking into them. We then did our own article on the effects of eco tourism on great white sharks. I thought we stimulated some good discussion, which is nice because I love talking about sharks and I enjoyed it. I was reading something interesting about the great white shark’s supposed ancester megaladon. One new hypothesis states that they should reassign carcharodon megalodon to carcharocles megalodon leaving the great white, carcharodon carcharias, alone in its genus. I haven’t read any papers concerning this but I do hope that they keep carcharodon megalodon.
Then we dissected firstly a yellow perch and then a dogfish (which we have yet to complete). I find dissections to be interesting and I think it would be cool to dissect a recently dead shark to see their internal functions just after death (so almost fresh).
