Today Doc’s charming barrage of knocks at outer door woke us up at 7 for a taxi to breakfast at 8, we ate at the same place as yesterday, a small room near a hotel. After brekky, Laura, a dive BVI assistant from England with a degree in marine biology gave us a presentation on reef life in the Carribean. She talked about everything from types of reefs, corals, sponges, and fishes. The presentation was very impressive and Laura knows a lot about everything. Afterwards, around 1030 or so went out to Savannah Bay. Savannah Bay was the most beautiful beach I can imagine, it was the classic Carribean beach from travel posters and such with crystal clear water and white sand. We snorkeled the reef and saw some absurd things, the coolest of which was a sting ray buried under the sand until it swam away as we got closer. After snorkeling, the dive instructors searched the reef and pulled in some weird stuff like sea worms and slugs as well as some urchins that we brought on shore and talked about. We had lunch on the beach and played frisbee. We found jorts in the water…. Classic locals. Next we dove at a world famous spot called The Chimney, named for the huge crevice that pipes out after awhile, like a chimney, folks. It was almost eerie, being in between two huge coral walls then to see it cap off over our heads, there were some really interesting things down there though, my favorite being either the brittle starfish that Casey handed to me to fiddle with or the massive lobster posted up in a little cave mean mugging us. That was a long dive. Casey let me fire off her speargun she carries with her to kill LionFish. On the way back to harbor I drove the boat and we are alive. Now we wait for our next taxi to take us to a Mexican dinner, I’m exhausted, hungry, and progressively more tan. This place is a riot. It’s like John Lennon said, “I am the merman.”
