Today was the another great day and the last day of scuba diving in the BVI. I woke up today to the sound of fierce rain. The trees outside were swaying from side to side and then one of our bug screens flew off the window. I fell back to sleep. Then 8:20 came, Doc and Mr. Kirby were at our door. “guys it’s 8:20, you need to be down to the taxi in ten minutes.” I quickly fumbled into my bathing suit and sprinted out the door. Surprisingly, my house was not the last ones out. We then drive straight to the marina where we ate breakfast inside the Dive BVI shop.after some quick chow, we hopped onto our boats and went to a dive site by some rocks off of Virgin Gorda. Since it was still overcasts and sprinkling from the morning storm, the water was a little bit chilly. We dove for 42 min and I saw some pretty cool fish, including a big parrot fish along with a 3 foot lobster. After our first dive we had a surface interval so I decided to go snorkeling. While free diving, I managed to see an eel moving from one rock to another, followed by being able to creep up to two squid. They were very cool because as they saw me, they began changing colors to camoflouge themselves. On my way back from snorkeling, I saw a large barracuda eyeing me down. In addition to seeing these amazing creatures, I also saw some sea walnuts which are a small type of jellyfish yet they have some sort of bioluminescence or electricity running through them so it looks like they are glowing. After our surface interval, my group and I prepared for transecting. This is the process of taking data on the health and population of the coral reef. My job was to take the fish count with my partner, we swam down a 100 meter line recording how many fish we saw. After our transect, we headed back to the villa resort for lunch, there we discussed the many questions that our class answered. It was basically a sum up of the class and a test on our knowledge about the class. Then we came back to our cabin where my day (at least in terms of the blog) ends. That’s all I’ve got. Tomorrow will be my last blog from the BVI.
