Marine Biology Final Day

0

Today we discussed the final two articles. The first one discussed a certain species of terrestrial blennies that can move from water to land. What was unique about these blennies was that their tails did this special twisting motion that allowed them to jump farther. This enabled them to jump from the water to land onto various rocks, where they would hide until the tide took them back into the ocean. I found this article very interesting, especially because it brought up a very good discussion on evolution. The second article was about the lion fish invasion. The lion fish are native to the Indo-Pacific. This species has invaded the eastern coast of the United States and the western Atlantic ocean. The definition of an invasion is the successful living and reproduction of a new species to a new environment. The lion fish have no know predators and are reproducing rapidly causing a small but significant change to the marine ecosystem in that area. I found this article very informative, especially because we will be seeing this exact species of fish down in BVI. The final thing we did in class was present our assigned notes over a different type of fish such as bony fish, cartilaginous fish, and other types of fish species. There was a lot of useful information that I gained from the class notes. A lot of the information will be very helpful when I am down in BVI and studying these specific types of fishes. I really enjoyed this course in the classroom and I can’t wait to go to BVI to work in the field that I have been studying for the past two weeks.
