Marine Biology Day 9

0

Ahhh, another day of marine biology. Today we began class by finishing our shark disection. After we finished we went back into the classroom to discuss last nights readings. This first reading was about porpises and their acoustic behavior in relation to hunting. What we learned and concluded is that the porpoises echolocating is similar to the large tooth whale. We also learned that when the porpoises approach their prey, they frequency of their echolocating techniques increase and the amplitude of the sound decreases by 10dB. I thought that this was interesting because the porpoises almost use this as a homing device to close in on their prey, just like a fighter jet. LOCK ON. TARGET DESTROYED. Another article we discussed was how temperature influences the development/survival rate of elkhorn coral larvae. We concluded that increasing ocean water temperature does affect the survival rate of elkhorn coral larvae. Today is the second to last post that will be from Jesuit. After that, my posts will be from BVI. Can’t wait!
