Today’s class consisted of a lot of group work. First, we started off with a class discussion about coral reefs and the overpopulation of lion fish. Lion fish came about the east coast of the United States in 1992, when Hurricane Andrew damaged an aquarium. Using their fan-like fins, or “mane,” they scare other fish and can corner them. After these discussions, we worked as a group to try and come up with a way to preserve a lost species of coral called, coral X. Through this, I learned about Charles Darwin’s theory involving the formation of atoll coral reefs. When a volcano becomes extinct, over time through plate shifting and erosion, it begins to shrink down back into the water. As it does this, coral begins to grow around it, creating an atoll coral reef.
