Today we firstly did the articles. The first article was about predation on the coral by parrotfish. This was another case of the article, while producing results, wouldn’t contribute to the solving of the problem itself that is the disappearance of coral. The second article was interesting, the “bio-control” of lionfish via grouper. I had no previous knowledge of this and found it very interesting, grouper eat lionfish but grouper are being overfished. I think that this highlights a problem with a possible solution, saying we have a possible solution but overfishing is preventing it. It’s this kind of research that’s really useful in everyday life.
Then we made a plan for saving the last larva of a certain species of coral. We did a fair amount of research however I was more focused on my coral drawing. I would’ve worked on it more had I had more time (I was trying to draw a squid which are deceivingly difficult to draw). But in the end we decided to grow more coral, test for an ideal habitat and implement the coral. Fairly simple but effective I imagine. Hopefully we won. I then drew a Moray Eel (Green Moray Eel) which I was semi-happy with. With more time I could’ve made it so much better (including adding more of a background and setting a light level for more effective shading) but that wasn’t really the objective of the assignment (I made sure I understood what we were doing before embarking on my drawing endeavour). Anyways this made me think about the BVI and I hope I’ll get time to draw some of the wildlife I see (maybe even a moray eel!) I’ll probably end up taking pictures and then draw (with some artistic twists) the animals in the pictures. Anyways today was my first successful marine drawing in a while and I hope it’s not the last time I’ll be able to draw.
This was my picture of reference when drawing the eel.
