Day 4 in the BVI

0

Today started out the same as the others. I woke up, showered, and put on my swim suit. Instead of going to the place we normally go, we headed straight towards the marina. We ate a light breakfast and got in the boat for our first dive of the day. Today we explored the rms. Rhone which is a steamer that sank in 1867 due to a hurricane. Out of about 300 people, on 20 survived. The boat went up against a big rock and broke open the hull. Cold water then rushed down the boat and came in contact with the hot boiler which induced an explosion that killed most people. The reason not many people survived was because the locked all the first class passengers in their rooms as well as strapping the the second and third class passengers to their beds so they wouldn’t interfere with the crew while they were moving. the boat was split in two by the explosion. We were able to see the bow and the stern, but not the mid section because the currents were too strong. The currents were so strong that they pushed me into the side of the ship. It cut my hand up a bit but other than that I’m fine, it just stings a little when I put on sun screen. After this we went to cooper island where we ate fish and chips for lunch. Not my favorite food, but it was ok. Sean, Killian, Alex, Andrew, and I walked along the beech when we found some coconuts. We split them open and drank the water and ate the meat on the inside. It is much better than anything found at the store. Attached is a picture of the coconut. We then got a tour of the resort; specifically, the ways the have implemented green technology. They currently have 90 solar panels and are about to install 30 more. They also collect rain water for use in running water and showers, then recycle that water to irrigate their gardens which grow lots of fruit so they can avoid going to the main island of Tortola to buy it. They are currently installing a bio reactor which will allow them to filter black water from toilets and such and turn it into water for irrigation. About every three months they remove the contra of the filter and add it to their already massive compost system. They take left over food and give it to a family on the other side of the island to feed their pigs which allows them to avoid going to Tortola to buy food for them. After this we went snorkeling. Nothing too special, but Andrew and I did see a four food tarpon in the bay which was really cool. From there we went back to the cabins for about two hours where I showered and read. We threw the frisbee for a bit and waited to go to dinner. Im getting kind of decent with he frisbee. I usually get it spot on t the person I’m aiming at as opposed to throwing it over the fence into the road like did upon the first days. We went to mad dogs and ate lasagna and ziti. I had an brownie Sunday after and we watched a presentation from Casey on the reef replanting process we will be doing tomorrow. I’m probably going to hang out with my roommates and read once I’m done with this. Bye!
