BLUEHEAD
Order – Perciformes
Family – Labridae
Genus – Thalassoma
Species – bifasciatum
The bluehead fish has the highest average abundance of all fish in the BVI. Therefore, it is likely that we will see a lot of these on our trip, also because the blue head often approaches divers and snorkelers. Sometimes seen in schools up to 1000 fishes, they feed upon plankton from water columns or scour the bottom for the eggs of other fish such as the sergeant major and the saddle blenny.
The bluehead fish is <25cm and can live up to 3 years. At maturity they have a blunt snout and blue head followed by a black and white band and long yellow stripwhich makes up the rest of the tail with exception to the black stripes on the extremities of the tail.
