Trading tanks for snorkels…and a DJ request for Miley

Today was a great day; we spent some time in the classroom and then headed out to the water. Casey provided the guys an interactive lesson on Reef Check (reefcheck.org) and laying transecting lines. Every student will be participating in collecting data for their regional database on coral reef health. Casey got the guys out of their seats and walking along a practice transect line in the classroom. It was impressive to see the guys identify the fish pictures Casey placed on the floor. Once they started figuring it out, we went out to Savannah Bay to see how long the transect lines will be in the ocean: 100 meters. A filling lunch was served on the beach; we had sandwiches, chips, oranges, and cookies. Everyone snorkeled for 30-45 minutes and saw a wide range of fish. Several guys saw moon jellyfish, lobster, and squid. Casey and Andrew collected several examples of urchins, fish, conch, and jellyfish. Casey, Andrew and Samantha taught the guys about each specimen and allowed them to handle them (minus the jelly). This was pretty cool, as they got to feel the things we are told to avoid touching while diving. After diving we went to the Baths and walked through massive granite boulders. Most of them are several times larger than your average Texas suburban. After weaving through rocks and and climbing small ladders, we arrived at Devils Bay. It was an amazing white sand beach at which the guys swam. Several of them spent time building sand castles on the shore. Finally, we capped off the day by having a buffet Caribbean dinner. Most of the guys helped themselves to several rounds…so they should be ready for a good sleep tonight. We start the day with a 2-tank dive on the Rhone wreck and another site. The title of the post was motivated by Will’s Miley Cyrus request at dinner. Classic.

Again, the day went very smoothly. Casey, Andrew and Samantha were great with the guys at Savannah Bay and the Bath guiding by Andrew and Samantha was perfect. Couldn’t ask for better hosts and colleagues. 20110706-083637.jpg20110706-083732.jpg20110706-083742.jpg20110706-083755.jpg20110706-083817.jpg20110706-083806.jpg20110706-083836.jpg20110706-083843.jpg20110706-083828.jpg20110706-083851.jpg20110706-083936.jpg20110706-083948.jpg20110706-083956.jpg20110706-084023.jpg20110706-084045.jpg20110706-084053.jpg20110706-084103.jpg20110706-084114.jpg20110706-084130.jpg20110706-084138.jpg20110706-084149.jpg20110706-084201.jpg20110706-084212.jpg20110706-084223.jpg20110706-084231.jpg20110706-084302.jpg
