Today was to say the least the best so far. Started out with some lemon tea with honey while chilling out in the cool office reading my novel. We then went to breakfast and learned about Coral Awareness. We then set off to go practice our transect lines and then had lunch. After lunch, we went snorkeling. I used my waterproof camera and took a plethora of photos and a few videos. It was so much fun because we were out on our own and I felt that I could finally use the knowledge I’ve learned, like naming fish. We saw squid, which is fantastic because I love squid. We also went to the edge of the reef and saw feeding stations and also a jellyfish. We then went to the baths which were lots of fun; I found myself singing songs in French. We then recuperated back in guavaberry to go to bath and turtle for dinner. Very good.
Today I got to thinking about climate change, again, when it was brought up during our talk after breakfast. I’m very conflicted on the matter, because it’s known that the Eocene was a time period teeming with life following the intense climatic changes of the Paleocene and the well known Cretaceous. Climate change as we know and estimate it is based off the events in the Paleocene, but the Eocene, the epoch following the Paleocene, was infamous for its life. That’s led me to have a different view on the matter, that climate change is good. I say this after seriously considering fierce opposition, but it makes sense to me. Cimate change causes extinctions, it’s empirically proven, but is extinction a bad thing? Humans think it is because it means changing their ways in order to survive firstly, but also because death is feared by all, justifiably. But in the case of evolution death is necessary, and for evolution to progress further deaths need to occur. It’s simliar to cleaning the slate, for me that’s climate change. So people fear climate change, some people don’t believe in it, but for me I accept climate change as something to accelerate a process which humans now to a certain extent, evolution, and taking that power from man. So, knowing and believing this I’ve devoted myself to trying to help the planet but more importantly to try to help others understand the situation. For me, animals take top priority and that’s why I’m here. Learning about them, learning their importance to try and pass the message to everyone else, hopefully through teaching.
