Marine Biology Day 12

0

Our day began at 8:30 as we waited for Speedy’s to come and pick us up. We were driven to the place we ate yesterday, I think it’s called Spring Cafe. We were served some grade A and than our indoor session began. A brief information of what we would do today is the first thing we did. After, Sam began to teach us about coral, which I thought was a very interesting session. All of what she taught correlated to awareness for coral, which I think is something huge that should be in everyone’s mind. When Sam was done Andrew began his session over fish ID. He identified many fish with their different species, characteristics, and more information along those lines. Out of all the species presented on the power point the turtles are what interested me the most. There are 2 types of turtles found at BVI, the hawksbill and the green turtle. I hope to see these later on in the week. After he finished with the power point, we were given a fish ID book:

This book contains more information on fish found in the BVI such as breif background, picture, conservaton status, feeding info, and where at BVI they an be found at.

We ate lunch and than headed to the marina to dive. We had 15 minutes to check out the shop. Than we boarded the boat which took us to Ginger Island

It was a very entertaining boat ride. When we arrived we got our gear on and got in the water. Today was more of an adventure dive, which was perfect. I saw many organisms with unique characteristics. The top two I saw was a parrot fish and squid. Unfortunately I did not have an under water camera, but I bought one today. After we finished the dive and returned to the boat, we were given permission to snorkel for a couple of minutes. This is where the group found a barracuda and the squid, the barracuda swam off before I could see it. Since we had finished before the other group, Andrew took us to look at this ship wreck nearby. It was a boat crash back in 1994, the driver left it on auto pilot but the winds pushed it back to the rocks. Fortunately no one was hurt.

We re-boarded the boat and headed back to Virgin Gorda. We arrived earlier than the other group so I went to the grocery store and bought an under water camera. Speedy arrived to take us back to Guava Berry Resort. When we arrived we were given time to work on homework. At 6 we went to Mad Dog’s for pizza night! It was a very fun night. This concludes day 12 and our 2nd day at BVI. So far I am having a great time and I can’t wait until tomorrow, we are snorkeling and will be at the beach for 3 hours.
