Day 4: Gregory Pope

Another early alarm at 6:50 woke me up to get to breakfast at 7. The mornings are always pretty quite since everyone is exhausted. Today was another busy day and we had very little down time. We hopped on the Twin Sister, our dive boat, with Lee amd Lucy and headed to our first dive site of the day that unfortunately I cannot remember the name to. This dive site was my favorite of the whole trip so far because of how deep it was and everything it included. This site contained multiple caverns and tunnels we were able to dive through and explore. There were no new fish I saw as I explored these tunnels but I did come across another lionfish and I further examined the caribbean species I already knew. Our max depth for the dive was set to 100 feet but some of the other divers had difficulty staying in that range. I personally broke the limit and got to 113 feet but was not there for long at all. We all ran out of air after about 30 minutes because our depth but it was an extremely fun dive. We then headed to our next dive spot and got busy as Lee said, “the pool is open,” which is his usual catch phrase before each dive. This dive was cool because we saw these giant parrot fish bigger than any one I have ever seen before. It’s coloring was beautiful because it had a ton of different colors all over its body. The gross part was how much it defecated as it swam by me. I was underwater for about 57 minutes and could have gone longer but our time limit was set to 60 minutes. We had the usual routine and went back for lunch and an hour turn around tovget ready and back on the boat for sting ray city. The boat ride there lasted 40 minutes and Jack entertained a few of us by playing some music on the way. I must have been exhausted because I passed out and slept the whole way there. By the time we were in the water I was a little freaked out because the stingrays were swimming so close to my face and their stingers can be deadly, RIP Steve Irwin. However, I adjusted and eventually was very comfortable touching the stingrays and observing them closely. We watched Lee feed them squid from a gatorade bottle as they swarmed him like bees around honey. The stingrays were Atlantic Stingrays and had mostly a brown coloring with hints of blue. They felt, as Jordi said, like a “slimy pancake.” After Stingray City we went back to the resort for free time and dinner. Later that night, we watched Mission Blue, a documentary about the ocean and how much it was dying out. This made us all pretty tired by the end of it but it was actually very interesting. Tomorrow should be an easier day and we will have a lot of time to relax and have some fun around the resort.
