On this final day in class we were lead in discussion by our classmates. The first article explained blenny fish may have been the bridge between origin of life in the water moving to land. The blenny fish has a vascular layer of skin to transfuse air into their lungs, so they can stay on land for a period of time. This is especially important to marine biology because one cannot test evolution, but this article can give us insight of how life may have originated in the water. The second article talked about the invasion of lionfish into the north atlantic ocean. The article explained how the fish were released from personal aquariums in Florida. The problem with lion fish is that scientists at this time did not know many predation facts of lion fish, so we do not know how to control them. This important to marine biology because many marine scientists are trying to find ways to control the invasion of lion fish. With new evidence, marine biologists can soon come up with a theory to control the rapid lion fish spread. And finally, my group lead a discussion about bony fish. The most interesting part in my opinion was the swim bladder of bony fish. This is an organ that utalizes oxygen gas to help bony fish maintain neutral buoyancy in the water. This is prevelant to marine biology because studying these fish can open up discussion about evolution and further prove evidence provided by scientists.
