Day 4

1

Today was very challenging waking up due to the exhausting day yesterday. Instead of waking up at the normal 7:15 we woke up at 7:30. After breakfast we saw a presentation by the head of an organization called ARK. The presentation talked about the history of sea turtles and other general facts and information. One of the things I found interesting was that there have been conservation efforts since 1620 but failed because the turtle population of that area went extinct. Also since turtle tagging was started multiple sea turtle species have been taken off the critically endangered list. After the presentation we went to tag turtles. The way we were supposed to tag the turtles was by snorkeling in the water and when our group spotted a turtle we had to get behind the turtle and pull the turtle up from behind. The one problem with this seemingly perfect strategy Is that the turtles are actually extremely fast. So because of this we were not able to catch any sea turtles. After the failure of catching turtles we broke for lunch at the Bath and Turtle where I had ginger teriyaki wings which are really good. After lunch we went to Savannah Beach where we searched and learned about invertebrates. My favorite invertebrate was the sea pearl. The sea pearl is one of the largest single cell organisms being about the size of a ping pong ball. The coolest part is that it is filled with fresh water because it filters the salt out of the water it takes in. I even got to hold the sea pearl along with other things like sea urchins which were very awkward to hold due to there tentacles. Afterwards we  came back to the houses and had dinner which consisted of wraps and rice and beans.
