Marine Biology Trip: Day 4

0

Synopsis

I started off the day by heading down to my group’s boat, the Sea Dragon, to sail to Little Dix’s Bay and try to catch sea turtles with Dr. Gore, a turtle biologist who worked with A.R.K. (The Association of Reef Keepers). Even though I only spotted two green sea turtles, one near Mount Trunk and the other one near Little Dix’s Bay, I wasn’t fast enough to catch and tag any. At the end of the snorkel dive, no one from the Sea Dragon managed to catch any sea turtles. After lunch, I headed out with my group to find invertebrates in Savannah Bay, where we snorkeled for about forty minutes attempting to catch small, 8-inch, juvenile squid.

Discoveries

With the help of Beth, one of the dive instructors, we were able to look up and identify a few species of invertebrates, such as a lettuce sea slug, a sea urchin, and a sea cucumber. I also discovered that sea urchins posses many tentacles between their spines that help them move around or turn over at times.

Looking forward for…

Tomorrow I am looking forward to going to the coral nursery to clean up coral, and diving in the Kodiak Queen to see ship wrecks.

Favorites

My favorite part of the day was snorkeling near Mount Trunk while turtle tagging because we had the chance to relax and grab onto one of the rails while also looking for turtles. One of he hardest part while turtle tagging was the fact that the turtles were about 10 feet underwater and didn’t want to come up.
