Today was the day that we got to dive the wreck of the RMS Rhone! Like every other day I was ready to get out there and dive right away. We woke up at about 7:45, drove to the dive shop, and ate breakfast. After this we headed out immediately. We went over to salt island where just off the shore the Rhone crashed on October 29, 1867 to do our two tank dive. The first dive we did was awesome! We dove the bow and the deck portion of the 310 ft. Ship and got to dive inside. Inside the bow there was a huge crab whose claw was the size of my head. We has a really fun dive and got to go down to about 80 ft. There were so many different fish species that made the Rhone their home. After the first dive we had to have an hour and a half Surface interval and during this time Casey told us the whole story of the Rhone. An interesting thing I took from it was that the Rhone, like the titanic, was dubbed unsinkable… But it sank. So never say your boat is unsinkable! Only 23 of the 250 people survived but only one of the twenty three was a passenger. So anyways on the second dive we dove the stern and the propeller area of the wreck. My favorite part of the dive was when we rubbed the porthole of passenger 26’s room for good luck. He was the only passenger to survive and it is good luck to rub the port hole of his room. After the second dive we went to cooper island for lunch and an Eco tour of the resort. Cooper island is really Eco friendly. They have so many new technologies to help the environment. After the tour we snorkeled off of the island and I saw a huge ray and a 3 foot long barracuda along with other cool things. We finished snorkeling and then went out to diner at the marina. Dinner was good and then we came home and are about to play some poker. Hopefully I win just like last night.
These are some photos of the wreck my friend Andrew took with his go pro!
