Day 1 – Coke Grand Cayman

0

Today’s agenda had me excited to finally get into the warm waters of Grand Cayman. Although the snorkeling expedition was short, I was able to see so many fish and corals. Immediately upon diving in, I am able to see so many different fan corals all flowing back and forth as the current pushes everything towards the shore. Many small fish surround these small bushes of coral and seem to hide behind it as I swim by. It’s not long before I come across a large bunch of elk horn coral. The healthy bunch is surrounded by many blue headed wrasses, four eyed butterfly fish, and many different angle fish. I swim out deeper and out of the corner of my eye, a small creature changes colors to blend in with its background. I look and find a group of about 8 squid just hovering over the sea floor. They quickly dart off into deeper water and I find myself following them towards the anchored dive boat. By the time I get to the dive boat, the squid have scattered and it seems that all the fish have too. I look up at the bottom of the boat only to find a large barracuda staring at me with its large teeth sticking out of its mouth. All fish have scattered and I turn to grab the attention of the group to show off my new discovery, but when I turn back I find that the barracuda is nowhere to be found. Slowly as I swim back to shore the fish begin to come out of hiding. As I get closer to the dock, a large spotted puffers fish emerges from behind the coral, and then quickly dives down under a rock to hide. It’s eyes are larger than any other fish around the area, and it continues to back away from me until I can no longer see it. I exit the water thinking my adventure was over, but I soon hear “EEL” shouted from the shore. I walk down the dock to find a small spotted money eel sitting in a small pool of water. I watch it as the waves roll over the rocks, but soon the waves crash down on the eel and it disappears. With that my adventure on day one ends.
