Gearing up for an early flight, I groggily threw my suitcase and backpack into the car and we were off to the airport at 3:30 A.M. I met the rest of the class at the airport and we were off. After a long trip through security we made it to our gate and took off to Florida. After a quick layover in Florida, we were on the plane to Grand Cayman. We landed and were quickly greeted with an hour long line into customs. After customs we were finally on the way to the Cobalt Coast resort. Once we were there, the staff greeted all of us with much needed food and refreshments. They showed us to our rooms, and we had about an hour to rest. After our rest, we tested the water in the Caymans by snorkeling for about 45 minutes. We saw plenty of amazing fish and coral including the midnight parrot fish, the goat fish, and brain coral. While we were snorkeling, I saw 4 or 5 Foureye Butterflyfish swim by in a school and go behind a large brain coral. This experience was a visual representation of how important the coral is to the ecosystem as the coral provides not only sanctuary, but also food for the fish. Unfortunately, I also saw bleached and dead coral which means that the coral has expelled the algae that it shares a symbiotic relationship with. After snorkeling, we relaxed by the pool and waited for dinner. We later watched the sunset and ate dinner at 7:00 next to the pool. I am so excited for the dive tomorrow and can’t wait to see all the fish.
