We started the day today by going to NELHA and learning about how their building works without using energy, but it still has air conditioning. The building has a copper roof with space between and it heats the air. The air is pulled out through exhaust pipes which leaves space for cool air to fill. The cool air comes from underneath the building where it runs through a cooling coil with cold deep sea water inside it. It comes up from the space beneath the building and goes through the building.

Next we saw a fish farm and a researcher told us all about what they do there. They find new ways to farm fish and grow bigger fish. The researcher showed us their 300 pound grouper that they have had for a few years. He told us about the requirements to work at the fish farm and how to be an intern.

Next we went to an abalone farm where 3-4.5 million abalone are grown. The abalone sit in tanks where the nutrient rich deep sea water runs into their tanks because they need to grow in cold water. a tank of abalone
We learned that the abalone have no ears and they cannot see very well so they are protected by a sturdy shell. All the abalone need 7,000-9,000 lbs of algae a day to live.algae being transported
Next we went on a submarine tour that went 111 feet under water. We saw two shipwrecks and lots of different fish.

Next we went to a lava cave and we went snorkeling inside of it. After we went snorkeling we spent some time at the beach. Finally we came home to a hot dinner and rest. I can’t wait to clean the beach tomorrow!
