Day 3: First Dive

0

This morning, we left early for a two tank dive off of Honokohau Harbour.

Our first dive was at a place called Sucle Er Up. At this site, it has a great big lava tube with lots of natural light from. It got its name from that lava tubes tendency to suck divers up and spit them out on the surface of the reef.

Lava tubes form during a volcanic eruption. Lava on the surface cools and hardens, but lava underneath the surface continues to flow, hollowing out the space beneath the surface and creating a cave.

We saw a lot of amazing animals during our first dive, Including a White Tip Shark,  Green Sea Turtle, an Octopus, and a White Mouthed Eel. I took pictures of all of them, and they should be up tomorrow.

On our second dive we went to Kaloko. The topography of this dive site was very different from the first one. While the first was very flat, like rubble, this one was rocky, from the volcano lava flow back in the 1800s. I left the camera on the boat, but we also saw some interesting fish. Such as a Porcupine Fish, a Frog Fish, a Yellow Margin Eel, a Devil Scorpion, and a Squirrel Fish.

After the dives we went to a lecture on the blackwater dive. There we learned the proper technique and logistics, for the dive, such as the six person tether, and the parachute anchor to stabilize the boat. A photographer also spoke to us about the creatures that we would see in the Pelagic Zone in the dark, such as the siphonophores and jellyfish. If we are lucky, we may see an octopus or seahorse.
