Virgin Gorda: Day 1

2

Waking up to a beautiful horizon, myself along with Joe Payne and Julian Michiels walked outside to hear what on earth was making this annoying noise (figure 1 below). A multitude of chickens to our surprise acted as our second alarm to get us up and running for the first day of an exciting trip. Throwing on our swim suit, we gathered at the bottom of the hill and waited for our taxi/bus to take us to breakfast. After eating breakfast, the Dive BVI team which included Casey and Jeff gave us a little orientation session. Mapping out our week, Casey eventually dismissed us for a break where we took a swim in the pool and waited for lunch to come our way. We had delicious sandwiches which nourished our bodies prior to our first dive. Arriving a the dive shop, we gathered our equipment and waited for the two enormous boats to dock. My boat ” The Sea Monkey” was led by Jeff. Jeff took us out to Valley Trunk which was about 15 minutes from the shore ( figure 2 below). We saw a diverse colony of coral about 40 feet below sea level. I saw Jeff use a speargun and killed a lion fish and fed it to an eel that was hiding in its hole. It was probably one of the most interesting but better yet unique experience of my life. Although Mr. Kirby’s humor is pushing me over the edge, I’m very excited for the following days to come.
