Hawaii Day 4

0

Today we woke up bright and early so that we could go on the zodiac tour. On the zodiac tour we saw so many different types of animals. First we saw pilot whales. Pilot whales are sexually dimorphic which means that they can change their gender depending on their size and other attributes. We also observed a baby pilot whale start nursing from its mother. Next we saw a Portuguese man o war. Our guide said that getting stung by a man o war is like getting kicked multiple times. After this we ate lunch at the place where Captain Cook first made landfall when he arrived at Hawaii. Next, we learned about the geology of Hawaii and how there are miles of tubes all throughout Hawaii. These tubes are formed by lava. Right before the zodiac tour ended our group got the opportunity to see a tiger shark. Next, our group saw a large group of spinner dolphins. After the zodiac tour, we geared up for our manta ray dive. Manta ray are born 3-4 feet and they can grow up to 18 feet in wingspan. On our way to the manta ray dive site we saw a monk seal hanging out around a fish farm. Before the manta ray dive, we dove around the dive site at day time and saw lots of cool fish and a moray eel. We went up and got ready for the manta ray dive. When I got to the bottom to see the manta ray feed I was in awe. There were two manta ray and they made graceful circles when they ate the plankton. I am so excited for tomorrow for whatever the teachers have planned.monk seal swimming next to orange bouymanta ray
