Day 7

0

Today during marine biology we had two groups present their presentations. One group covered the lion fish invasion in the Caribbean. This invasion could have some major consequences since lionfish have very few predators in the Caribbean. This allows the lionfish population to grow unchecked. We learned of one predator the lionfish have which is the grouper; however usually large groupers are the ones eating the lionfish and the large groupers are the ones targetted for fishing which allows more lionfish to mature and reproduce. The second presentation discussed the effects parrot fish had on coral. One major effect is the scars they leave on the coral after eating it. After discussing this article in class we came to the conclusion that thia article although lacking ground breaking findings or proof contributed to the big picture on the factors which affect coral reefs, a hot topic because the amount of coral worldwide seems to be diminishing. Finally to end the day each table worked as a group to save coral x from extintion and we competed for “15 million dollars” and a chance to save this coral. Who ever has the best plan wins and tomarrow we get the results.
