Marine Biology Day 5 Blog

Slayton, Nicholas

Today, we ate breakfast at Alamander house, and because I wasn’t that hungry, I didn’t eat much. After our group was done with getting ready to go, we went down to the marina to get on our boat. When we were ready to dive, we went out to the Kodiak Queen, which was a ship that was in Pearl Harbor during the attack. It survived, and was sunk on purpose by a group of businessmen that wanted to dive there. They also built a kraken to be placed on the boat as a prop. The ship itself was impressive due to its sheer size, and had hidden symbols in it such as a “2017” message with a smiley face underneath it. I also pretended to steer the ship by taking the steering wheel. Zoltan, our dive master, held a moon running race for my group of four, which was Trip, Matthew, Tyler, and I. I came in last unfortunately because I cannot run underwater. At the end of the dive, I lost my group, and had to find them, which I did luckily enough. After we came up, we rested, and jumped off the boat into the ocean for a few minutes at our next spot. For our last dive of the entire trip we went to Mango Bay to repair the coral that Jesuit had planted earlier. I was responsible for cleaning the pipes that the coral were hanging off of, to make sure that they were safe from deterioration. There were multiple trees of coral, but me and my buddy, Tyler, were only responsible for one of them. Once we were done cleaning all the trees, we returned to our boat, where we waited for a few minutes till we traveled to a snorkeling site. At that site, we ate lunch on the sea, which was pretty neat. After everyone jumped into the ocean, we snorkeled for 40 minutes close to the shore. While it appeared as if it was to be an uneventful snorkel, Tyler, Luke, Trip, and Matt got stung multiple times, with Tyler screaming like a kid for a few seconds. As soon as all of us get back on the boat, Tyler’s stings were immediately noticeable, and were quite funny to look at it. His chest was swollen, and his arms and back were itching him immensely according to him. We took off for the dock, and I was extremely happy, because I was dizzy, tired, and sunburned from a long day in the sun and ocean. For the last time, we packed up all of our equipment and stowed it away in the storage areas, which was oddly satisfying. Our taxi driver picked us up to take us home, where we relaxed and took a shower. Dinner was lasagna with garlic bread again, which was good, if a little repetitive. After that, we wrote our blogs, and finished our presentation on the effects of algae on coral reef health. Then, we went to bed, and slept for tomorrow, which is to be our last night here. Good Night!
