Marine Biology, Day 3

Slayton, NicholasFor this morning, our cabin was responsible for preparing breakfast for the group, so we got up a bit early to put everything out. Breakfast was uneventful, and after that, we went to the dive shop to do our last two project dives. Once we were fully equipped, we traveled to Mountain Point for the first dive. Down there, we saw a stingray, and other assorted fish. As well, the current was choppy and pushed us all around. It was pretty clear why the spot was called Mountain Point, because our descent was really fast and deep. Going up was easy, and we rested for a few minutes before we went to the Coral Gardens, where an airplane was sunk years ago on purpose. It was a nice spot, particularly because the airplane was really dilapidated and worn down. That gave it an interesting edge to it, as I could swim in it. Then, a whole school of fish swam right by us, and I swam in the middle of them. There was a big barracuda in the middle of them, and it was being circled by the other fish. We completed our project on that dive, making 7 total spots total for us. We swam right back up, and then came back to the boat. After we dove, we came back to the boat, and then we went back to shore for lunch. The lunch was sandwiches and chips, and was filling. When we came back to the hotel, we had a little bit of downtime, then we had to start writing down and completing our project. Our group made solid progress, but at 3.30 we had to go down to the beach for a surprise. The surprise turned out to be a series of beach games, which included beach pictionary, burying someone in sand, “late for work”, and a blind navigation. The final game was a relay around the beach which involved knocking down a pipe with a weight belt, rolling down a hill, swimming around the beach and then running up and tagging your teammate in the hand. It was extremely tiring, even though one of my teammates, Matthew, was able to do it twice, which was impressive. After we were all done, we relaxed on the beach, and then ate a barbecue of hamburgers and hot dogs. The hamburger was really good, largely because I hadn’t had one in a loving time, so it was particularly delicious. Once the night set on, all of us went to go night snorkeling, which was neat. There was a tarpin down there, which only comes out during the night. I did some one breath diving , which is something that I enjoy doing, because the air supply is limited. Finally we began to come back to the cabin so that we could shower, change to come back and write our blog, and once we were done, go to bed. Good night!
