Day 6: Last Day

0

Our last day in the British Virgin Islands has been another fun and engaging day. We started the day off by preparing breakfast with my project group. I spiced things up a little bit by making eggs that were thoughtfully donated to me by Eduardo. After we had a successful breakfast, we got ready to leave at 8:40 for a service project. When we made it to the service site, we walked through the school to the back, where we would be working. I was given my first job and started digging a ditch. Once it was noticed that the job only took one person, I was repurposed to helping dig around footings so they could be filled with cement. After I had finished doing this, I spent around 30 minutes shoveling dirt into a bucket, then carrying the bucket to more buckets so that the dirt could be poured into them. These buckets were pulled up by ropes and poured into more buckets to be carried to another pile of dirt. My next job was planting trees and other plants so create a nice environment for kids to walk through. First, with Mason’s help, I planted a tree next to the new library. Then I planted a palm tree with Miss Bramlett and finally, finished the service project by planting some smaller plants around another tree. After the service project, our whole group went back to Bath and Turtle to have another good lunch. After I finished my delicious quesadillas, we made our way down to the dive shop to get some souvenirs before we leave tomorrow. After getting some goods from the shop, we made our way back to the wifi room to do our group presentations. Our presentation went well and I felt confident in our performance in our presentation to the dive staff and our teachers. When we presented, we found that we should have added an extra graph with both of our variables in it. Our variables were the number of fish compared to the percentage of Algae covering the area. We got these variables from our question which was, Is the presence of algae proportional to the volume/diversity of fish population in that area?  We also changed our conclusion from saying that we found our data inconclusive to saying that we needed more data to make a conclusion. Once all of the projects had been presented, we went up to the Top of the Baths restaurant to have the best meal that we had all week. We ate ribs, mac and cheese, and a dessert of a brownie and ice cream. Overall, today was a great day and it made for an amazing end to one of the best trips that I’ve had in my life. I am so thankful for the opportunity given to me by my parents and all of the people who have organized this trip and all of the activities that I participated in throughout it. I learned a lot and was able to make the most of the week that I had in the British Virgin Islands and would recommend that others try to go on this trip because it is a great way to spend a week in summer having fun, but not letting your brain waste away as you watch TV and don’t work on school. While I can’t wait to get back home and to my family and friends, I can’t even express the amount of fun that I have had on this trip.
