Marine Biology Trip: Day 6

0

Synopsis

At the beginning of the day, we started by going to the Bregado Flax local high school as part of our service project. I helped out by organizing children’s books on the newly built library for the primary and high school students. Afterwards, I worked on carrying dirt up onto the second floor to mix with gravel and make a new garden next to the classrooms. One of the most important part of today was the presentation that I did about my team research project, which I worked on for a long portion of the day. We explained to the divemasters and instructors that the relationship between the health of staghorn coral and fish are positively correlated, which means that more fish will interact with healthier staghorn coral.

Discoveries

When I was doing the service project at the local high school, I discovered that the public schools in Virgin Gorda are severely underfunded, and the school had just recently gathered funding from the Richard Branson Foundation to build a new library. This made me realize how funded Jesuit Preparatory is in comparison to Bregado Flax.

Favorites

My favorite part of the day was during dinner at the Top of the Bass Restaurant because they served BBQ ribs and plantains on the buffet.
