Coral Planting

Doc woke us up today, because we were sleeping in. We had a lot to do today, because we headed out to the dive site today really early on. Today was coral planting day, and we worked in conjunction with MB2. MB1 dove first to find fragments of coral; we had heard that someone dropped anchor on coral, so we might be able to find some good fragments since we aren’t allowed to break off coral pieces from healthy coral. We found lots of fragments, with my group (me, Byrne , and Wallace) finding 10 pieces. Unfortunately, we didn’t actually realize what fire coral was, so I put a piece in our bin, and Nick got caught trying to put fire coral in our bin. It was quite embarrassing. That was about a 40 minute dive around 20ish feet, so I still had 2000 psi for the next dive. After a small snack break, we paired up with a MB2 student. I was paired with Christian Koeijmans. We went down and zip-tied two coral fragments to his cinderblocks. We did it really quickly, and so we got to swim around looking at everyone else’s. Afterwards, we ate lunch and got to snorkel, and then we headed back to the docks and to our cabins. We headed up the mountains after showering, and we had mass. It was a very short mass, barely 25 minutes, but that was because it was only the two marine biology classes in there, and none of us can sing. Leaving the church, we headed to Guavaberry beach for a barbecue. We had hotdogs and hamburgers for dinner, and finally we got to snorkel later in the night. It was really dark out, but one could see to the bottom even without a flashlight. The only thing we really saw was a tarpon, but it was still a very cool experience. We were given the night off for blogging, which is why this blog comes a day late.DCIM100GOPRO
