Day 3 BVI

Today, I woke up got dressed and took a shower because of the intense humidity down here. Every. Every mourning I wake up and I am extremely sweaty. We went down to the cattle guard to wait for the teachers and Glenn took us to the olde yard for breakfast and a presentation by Laura on fish identification. It was a bit of a refresher on the material learned in class. Laura gave a very nice presentation that was about 1h 30min long and filled with information. After this, we headed out to the beautiful savanna bay where we snorkeled for about an hour using our fish I.d. skills. Killian, Alex, and I went way out to the south and found a beautiful section of reef with big stalks of elkhorn coral and interesting rock formations. As I returned to he beach, I found that everyone had found my frisbee deep within my bag and were playing with it on the beach. Naturally, I was perfectly okay with it because I had the strong urge for some physical activity as well. We played full body contact frisbee until lunch when we had sandwiches and chips. We snorkeled after lunch and returned to the beach to find Glenn waiting to take us to the marina. On the dive, we went to a rock formation called the chimney, which happened to be Jacque Cousteau’s favorite dive location in the Caribbean. It is an interesting rock formation where there is an overpass followed by a narrow swim through called the chimney. The chimney has a slit incline as you go through it and I thought that my buoyancy was low while progressing. I decided to inflate my BCD with a little air to compensate for the incline. I floated way to high and had to push off the rocks to get through. It just so happened that I push off not rocks but some fire coral which leaves a nasty sting for about 5hrs. I saw a turtle and was very excited to see one outside the realm of tagging. It was very cool. We returned to the boat and road back to the marina where Glenn took us back to the resort. We all took showers and headed down to the guavaberry beach where had a beach barbecue filled with burgers and brats. then we commented my favorite activity so far on he trip, a night snorkel. Because of the jelly fish population in the bay, we all chose to wear wetsuits. We got flashlights and headed out. We saw many urchins that had crawled out on top of the rocks. We also saw a barracuda, tarpon, a southern sting ray, and 2 octopi. The day was unfortunately over. I think the days are progressing to be better and better. I can’t wait till tomorrow.
