Today I learned about different aspects of marine life from the articles presented. The first article was about ecotourism, and from it I learned that ecotourism, while it raises awareness about wild life, it can also have harmful impacts. Ecotourism can lead to killing of species and deforestation, which can leave unrepairable scars on a habitat. The next article was about “alien” species that are not native to a region, but are carried over by ships that they attach to. I learned that these animals can be extremely destructive and there is not much we can do to remove them. Then group F presented an article about the use of birds as a indicator species for oil spills. But what the article taught me was the fact that the real problem is chronic oil spills, which are constantly damaging our oceans and wild life. Then the last article was presented; the group explained the work being done to help construct artificial reefs out of car tires. I learned that such a simple and inexpensive material could be used to construct a habitat for a variety of species. It was a very informative series of articles.
