Luke Austin- Day 7: The Closing Chapter

0

It’s the final day of diving in Grand Cayman and Luke Austin and his room make sure to take advantage of the day by waking up five minutes late and getting to breakfast last. After a rushed breakfast of toast, eggs, and sausage, the whole marine biology group piles into the Twin Sister for the last time and heads out for the fried dive site Sand Hole where our depth was 80ft. Before our dive at Sand Hole, Curtis, our dive master for this specific dive, told us that there was a good chance that we might observe sea turtles feeding on the sponges, and after submerging, our group saw two hawksbill sea turtles feeding. Hawksbill Sea turtles are distinguishable due to their pointy shells and beaks that resemble a hawk. Hawksbill sea turtles are critically endangered due to human impact. Shortly thereafter, we saw a lobster hiding in a rocky overhang and we made sure not to get too close. Afterwards we surfaced and were off to the next dive at Ocean Pointe, named after the Ocean Pointe Resort where our depth was 60ft. We dove down for our last dive of the trip and promptly saw a trumpetfish’s elongated body swaying in the swells of the ocean next to the sea weed, waiting for a smaller fish to wander closer. Throughout the dive we saw four more trumpetfish which was the most we have seen on any dive. After the first trumpetfish, we saw a lemon ray camouflaged in the sand, distinguishable due to their round bodies and spots. Afterwards, we saw two lionfish hiding in a cave flaring their spines as we got closer. Afterwards, we surfaced from our last dive and were off to the resort for lunch. We made sure to thank Bernie and Curtis for helping us during the dives and making the week great and left the Twin Sister for the last time. After lunch, we prepared for the prayer service later tonight and recuperated after the dives. We rested in our rooms until 6:30 P.M. and then had a great cookout dinner of grilled shrimp and burgers. After dinner, we had a prayer service where we reflected on the week and discussed how our spirituality appeared in our time at Grand Cayman. Then we watched a wonderful video made by Doc that recapped all the things we did during the week. After, we left for our rooms to blog and pack. I had such a great time this week and am very thankful for the opportunity to go on such a great trip.
