Submarines and Mollusks

Today we saw an aquaculture site, observed abalones being grown, and saw some neat things underwater with a submarine. Aquaculture is when you grow and cultivate food underwater. We saw fish being raised on special diets to taste better and have a less significant impact on the environment. This is to prevent the ecosystem from being upset by human consumption. One specific species we observed being raised was the abalone. Abalones are water dwelling gastropods that can be eaten and cultivated by people. They taste like calamari, cling to objects with their foot, and have shells they live in. Finally, we saw a sunken ship while on the submarine. The ship was owned by a couple who argued about wether or not to stay in Hawaii while sailing. During the argument, the ship caught fire and sank to the bottom. When asked for the ship’s name by the insurance company, the husband claimed the ship as the Crazy Lady.
