After a long, overwhelming, and exhausting day of traveling, we have made it to our Hale (Hawaiian for house) and are split into groups. I am staying in the main Hale along with two other pairs of seniors and the three teachers. The collection of houses and surrounding lawns grow clusters of fruit trees. The seniors explored the area seeking avocado, mango, and coffee trees. We went over the schedule for this week after dinner. The week will be very adventurous and stunning, since we will be climbing Mauna Kea, and SCUBA diving in areas where the water is two miles deep. I am most excited for the hike up Mauna Kea because of the ten thousand foot elevation and the thirty degree Farenheit climate. The almost freezing temperature at the top of the mountain will give me my fix of cold weather for the week…hopefully.
