Day 1: Kona Arrival

0

The plane touched down at KOA today around two this afternoon. We met up with our hosts, the Hansens, and we drove about thirty minutes to where we’re staying. The weather was very foggy today. There was lots of vog in the sky. Once we all got settled in our rooms, I went for a swim, and then had pulled pork BBQ for dinner.

After dinner we went over the itinerary for the trip. What I’m most excited about is the Manta Ray Dive. I’ve swam with Manta Rays once before, and I loved it. I brought an underwater camera and I can’t wait to get pictures of them. This time, we’re doing it right next to the airport, which is .

I’m also really excited about summiting Mount Mauna Kea. This is something that I haven’t done. Because of the vog, there isn’t very good star gazing near the coast, but at the summit, it should be about as clear as it gets on Earth. I’ve even heard that we will see the volcano erupting in the distance because it is so bright. It should glow through the clouds off in the distance.
